What was Yugoslavia?
Yugoslavia is a country in south east Europe. It was led by the communist Josip Tito from 1945 until his death in 1980.
When did Yugoslavia become communist?
Yugoslavia became a communist state in 1945. It was unique amongst the countries of eastern Europe as it became communist independently and was therefore not a satellite state of the Soviet Union.
What were relations like between Yugoslavia and the USSR?
At first, relations between Yugoslavia and the USSR were good. However, Yugoslavia's leader, Tito, repeatedly ignored Stalin as he was determined to implement communism in his own way. Things came to a head when Tito applied for Marshall Aid.
Was Yugoslavia a member of Cominform?
Yugoslavia was a member of Cominform until it was expelled in 1948 due to worsening relations with the USSR.
What was Yugoslavia's role in the Cold War?
Yugoslavia's position was unusual as the only communist state in Europe not behind the Iron Curtain. As a result, the USA gave it economic aid. However, it was a turbulent relationship as the state was too independent for the USA.
