What was the WPA (Works Progress Administration)?
The WPA was the Works Progress Administration. It was set up in 1935 to give work to Americans from all ethnic and working backgrounds, including actors and artists. It moved beyond the building works of the PWA, creating office jobs for workers.
How did the WPA support culture in 1930s America?
The WPA created work for unemployed artists. Actors were hired to put on free shows and artists painted public art.
