Tipis

What is a tipi?
A tipi is a shelter that nomadic Native Americans lived in.
What were tipis made from?
A tipi was made from buffalo hide, or skin.
Why did Plains Indians live in tipis?
Tipis were simple, which was important given the general lack of resources on the Plains. They helped the Plains Indians continue their nomadic lifestyle, as they were easy to put up, take down, and transport. They were also suited to the changeable weather on the Plains.
How were tipis suited to the Plains?
Tipis were conical, so harsh winds could blow around them. They had a flap for opening in the summer, to let cool air in. This could be closed in the winter, to keep warmth inside the tipi.
Who owned the tipis?
The women owned and maintained the tipi.
