What happened to the Lusitania?
The Lusitania was a British civilian cruise liner that was sunk by a German U-boat.
When was the Lusitania sunk?
The attack took place on 7th May, 1915.
How was the Lusitania sunk?
The Lusitania departed New York, bound for Liverpool. However, it was torpedoed just 13km from the coast of Ireland by the U20, a German U-boat. The ship sank within 18 minutes.
Who was on the Lusitania?
There were 1,959 passengers on board. Of the 1,198 who drowned, 128 were American.
Why did the Germans sink the Lusitania?
The Germans attacked the Lusitania as there were war materials on board. This made sinking the ship justifiable in the context of war.
What were the reactions to the sinking of the Lusitania?
There was international outrage at the sinking. Britain and America protested and there were calls for America to declare war on Germany. America issued a warning to Germany but did not declare war at that time.
