What was the Second Balkan War?
The Second Balkan War was fought between Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece. Serbia and Greece supported each other and were backed by Turkey and Romania.
What caused the Second Balkan War?
Bulgaria was not happy with the way in which Turkey's land had been divided up among the Balkan League countries.
When was the Second Balkan War?
The war started in June 1913, a month after the original peace agreement from the first war. Bulgaria was soon overpowered, and an armistice was signed in August 1913.

Bulgaria fought against Greece, Serbia, Turkey and Romania.
What happened in the Second Balkan War?
Bulgaria invaded Greece and Serbia in June. However, Bulgaria did not expect the unified response from the other countries and was forced to ask for an armistice.

  • Serbia gained territory and grew more aggressive towards other Balkan countries following its success.
  • Serbians in Bosnia-Herzegovina were inspired by the victory and wanted to join Serbia.
  • Austria-Hungary became concerned by the possibility of revolt within its empire, specifically in Bosnia.
  • Austria-Hungary was committed to trying to control Serbia.
  • Bulgaria was resentful of Serbia's gain and was waiting for an opportunity to gain back some of its lost land.
