Who was Rasputin?
Grigori Rasputin was a Russian mystic who claimed he had healing powers. Some people thought he was a charlatan, but he became very powerful at the court of Tsar Nicholas II.
When was Rasputin born?
Rasputin was born on 21st January, 1869.
How did Rasputin make it to the court?
Rasputin became a wanderer after he had a holy experience. He eventually found his way to the court of Nicholas II because he had a reputation as a healer.
What was Rasputin's role in the court?
Rasputin first became a healer for Alexei, son of Nicholas II and his wife, who had haemophilia. He also advised Tsarina Alexandra.
Why was Rasputin controversial?
There were 4 key reasons why Rasputin was considered controversial:
  • He started to accept bribes and sexual favours.
  • Many believed he had an affair with Alexandra, the tsarina.
  • Rasputin advised Alexandra over appointments to the government and interfered with political decisions during the First World War while the tsar was at the frontline. People questioned how effective the government was, and how much influence Rasputin's had.
  • The Tsarina would not listen to any criticism of Rasputin.
When was Rasputin murdered?
Rasputin was murdered in December 1916, by a group of aristocrats.
Why was Rasputin murdered?
Rasputin was murdered because he was hated by many members of the aristocracy as he was ruining the reputation of the royal family.
