As Britain became more multicultural, some new laws were needed to ensure that people from different minority groups were treated fairly.

When did racial discrimination become a crime?

In 1968, the Race Relations Act made it illegal to refuse jobs, housing or public services to anyone on the basis of their race, ethnic background or country of origin.

When did racial hate crime become illegal?

In the 21st century, laws against racial discrimination and attacks were strengthened in 2 main ways:

• ❖ In 2005 the Criminal Justice Act meant crimes based on racial hatred would result in harsher sentences.
• ❖ In 2006 a law was passed to define the spreading of racial or religious hatred as a crime.
