What is people smuggling?
People smuggling is not a new crime. Slavery existed until 1833 and poor girls were sold into prostitution throughout the 19th century. However, people smuggling has increased in recent times and takes two main forms.
How does people smuggling involve immigrants?
Tougher immigration controls and conflict in different parts of the world have led to an increase in people smuggling. Immigrants who might otherwise not be allowed to enter Britain pay to be smuggled into the country.
How does people smuggling involve slavery?
Modern slavery involves people from poorer countries being brought to the UK and forced to work for very low or no wages. Some women and children are forced into prostitution and controlled by fear.
