Why did the Mountain Meadows Massacre happen?
The Mormons were expecting an attack from the US Army. It is rumoured that the pioneer party that was attacked were taunting the Mormons. In this time of heightened unrest, the Danites attacked.
What were the consequences of the Mountain Meadows Massacre?
There were several consequences of the masacre:
  • Danite leader John D. Lee was executed for his part in the murders.
  • In 1858, an agreement was made with the US government about how Utah might follow laws in the wider US, and the Mormons were pardoned.
  • Finally, in 1896, Utah ended polygamy and was accepted into the Union.
