Who was Matthew Hopkins?
Matthew Hopkins led the witch-hunts of 1645-1647.
When did wich craft became a serious crime?
During the early modern period, witchcraft became a serious crime.
What did he do in East Anglia?
Hopkins began combing areas of East Anglia for witches. He found and named 36 women on whom he collected. Many were charged with using harmful magic against their neighbours, resulting in injury to animals or failed crops.
How did he treat the suspects?
The suspects were often kept awake all night - either standing still or being forced to move around - to coerce them into a confession.
What was his success?
Hopkins's so-called success at unmasking witches led to other areas engaging Hopkins to rid them of witches. Hopkins, of course, made quite a lot of money from his activities.
Were any men accused?
There were cases of men being accused pf being witches too. A local vicar was accused based on the fact that 'devil marks' was found in his mouth. These were probably mouth ulcers, a sign of poor diet.
What was the result of his death?
Matthew Hopkins died on 12 August 1647, probably of pleural tuberculosis.
