Who was David Lloyd-George?
David Lloyd-George, Britain's prime minister, was a pragmatist who was motivated to get the best deal for Britain at the Paris Peace
How did the war affect Lloyd-George's views?
During World War One, Britain lost nearly a million soldiers and suffered in German attacks on British towns. There was also serious economic disruption.

Lloyd-George was re-elected in November 1918, on the promise that he would 'make Germany pay'.

He was concerned that the threat from Germany should be reduced and also about keeping France safe, as it was so close to Britain geographically.

He believed Germany should pay Britain for the full cost of the war.

However, Lloyd-George wanted Germany to recover and make money so it could trade with Britain.

He felt losing the Rhineland or being liable for very high would make Germany too poor to trade.

He was concerned a weak, poor Germany might become communist, as Russia had.

He believed a very harsh might lead to resentment and revenge from Germany later on.
