The Council of the League

What was the Council of the League?
The Council of the League was the executive of the League of Nations.
What did the Council do in the League?
The Council made important decisions for the League of Nations:
  • It met 4 or 5 times a year, and when there was a crisis.
  • It had 4 permanent members in 1920 - Britain, France, Japan and Italy. These might sometimes dominate discussions and decisions.
  • Germany became a permanent member in 1926.
  • It also had between 4 and 11 non-permanent members, who were voted in by the Assembly at three-year intervals.
  • It could reach decisions and react more quickly than the Assembly in times of crisis.
  • Votes had to be unanimous, which mean each member of the Council could veto decisions.
