Why was Alexander Kerensky important?
Kerensky was important for 7 key reasons:
  • He investigated the Lena Goldfield Massacre of 1912.
  • He was elected as a member of the fourth Duma as a delegate from the Trudovik Party. This was a party formed when some members of the Socialist Revolutionary Party broke away because of the Party's decision to not take part in the first Duma.
  • He was appointed vice-chairman of the Petrograd Soviet.
  • He was made the Minister of War in May 1917, and organised the failed June Offensive against Germany and Austria, which led to the July Days unrest.
  • He appointed General Kornilov as the commander-in-chief of the Russian Army and had to use the Bolsheviks to stop General Kornilov's attempted revolt in July 1917.
  • He became the leader of the Provisional Government in July 1917.
  • He failed to stop the Bolsheviks from overthrowing the Provisional Government in October 1917.
When did Alexander Kerensky die?
Kerensky fled to America from Russia after the October Revolution of 1917 and lived there until his death in 1970.
