Jerusalem is a city that has been disputed over by religious groups.

Jerusalem is in the Middle East. It is in Israel but it used to be in Palestine.
Why is Jerusalem disputed over?
Different religions place a significance on Jerusalem due to religious events that have happened there.
Why is Jerusalem disputed over by Jews?
For Jews it is the Promised Land. They settled there over 3,000 years ago. They lived there until the 2nd Century AD when the Romans took over the lands. This led to the Jewish Diaspora. It holds the Temple of Jerusalem which contains a chest with the original ten commandments as given to Moses by God.
Why is Jerusalem disputed over by Christians?
Jerusalem is where Jesus celebrated his Last Supper, where he was crucified and where he rose from the dead. In the 4th Century the Church of Holy Sepulchre was built on the site of Jesus' crucifixion and tomb.
Why is Jerusalem disputed over by Muslims?
Muslims conquered the area in 640 AD and converted the population to Islam. The Prophet Mohammed visited Jerusalem in 620 AD and ascended to heaven for one night. The Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of Rock were built. Apart from a 90 year gap (Christian Crusaders) Jerusalem remained in Muslim hands until 1917.
