What is the Holocaust?
The Holocaust was the systematic murder of six million Jewish men, women and children by the Nazis.
When did the Holocaust happen?
The Nazis came to power in 1933 and started their persecution of the Jewish population from then until the end of the Second World War in 1945.
Who did the Holocaust happen to?
Many different people were persecuted under the Nazis but the word Holocaust refers to the Jews who were persecuted and killed at this time.
Where did the Holocaust happen?
The Holocaust started in Germany but spread across Europe as the Nazis occupied these countries in the Second World War. Many concentration camps were also in Poland.
What did the Holocaust lead to?
There were 4 important results of the Holocaust.
  • Many had lost their entire families and homes.
  • Many had suffered very much.
  • Many emigrated and lots of them wanted to move to Palestine.
  • There was much international sympathy for them.
What did the Holocaust cause the Zionists to want?
At a Conference in London in 1945, Zionists demanded a Jewish state be created in Palestine as a result of the Holocaust.
What did the British do as a result of the Holocaust?
Ernest Bevin, the British Foreign Secretary set up a strict limit of 1,500 Jewish immigrants a month into Palestine to try and stop a civil war in Palestine due to the consequences of the Holocaust.
