What was the Guomindang?
The Guomindang (also referred to as the GMD or Kuomintang / KMT), was a nationalistic political party which operated in China from 1919-49.
What were the Guomindang beliefs?
The Guomindang had 3 key beliefs:
  • They believed in the 'Three Principles of the People' - nationalism, democracy, and economic reform.
  • This included the establishment of a republic to rule China.
  • The Guomindang also promoted common political features to that of European fascism, e.g. one central leader.
Why was the Guomindang formed?
The Guomindang was formed to create a united nationalist front, which would seize power from the various warlords and unite China to create a single state.
When was the Guomindang formed?
The GMD was founded in October 1919, though early forms and members of the group are seen in the Revolutionary Alliance (1905) and the Nationalist Party (1912).
Who founded the Guomindang?
The group was founded by Sun Yat-sen and Liao Chongzhen. Sun Yat-sen would become the group's first president.
