What was the Great Die-up?
The Great Die-Up happened during a particularly harsh winter when the cattle could not access grass through the snow. Many thousands of animals died, thought to be up to 15% of the total number. Many people in the cattle industry went bankrupt as a result.

What was the impact of the Great Die-up on the cattle industry?
After the Great Die-Up, there were 15% fewer cattle. This led to some ranches going bankrupt. Smaller ones survived by enclosing their lands and cattle, in order to monitor them better. Ranches also switched to purer breeds of cattle .
How were cowboys affected by the Great Die-Up?
There were fewer jobs available for cowboys. Many worked on the smaller ranches, patrolling and maintaining fences, and feeding and monitoring the cattle.
