There were a number of steps that led to Ghana's independence.
  • After the Second World War, Britain wanted to keep the manufacture of chocolate in British factories, in order to help re-build the British economy.
  • This led to riots in West Africa, by ex-soldiers who had fought for the empire in the war, but were now lacking job opportunities.
  • The British arrested the leading activists, including leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) political party.
  • Kwame Nkrumah broke away from the UGCC and set up the Convention People's Party, which demanded 'Self-government NOW!'.
  • Nkrumah's party won the democratic election, and the British appointed him to lead the country - under continued British rule - in 1951.
  • In 1957, the British finally allowed Ghana to become independent.
