Field Marshal Sir John French was one the key British commanders on the Western Front during the First World War.
What did Field Marshal Sir John French do?
Field Marshal Sir John French had several roles during the war:
  • He was the first commanding officer of the British Expeditionary Force. He led them to France in 1914.
  • He was replaced in December 1915 because he had lost the trust of the British prime minister, David Lloyd George.
  • From 1916-1918, he was sent to Britain to command the British Home Forces stationed in Britain.
