The Closure of the Frontier

In 1890, the US Census Bureau closed the frontier. The West had been fully settled so the frontier had, in effect, ceased to exist.

There were 3 main consequences of the frontier closure.
  • The preservation of wild areas, which later resulted in national parks such as Yellowstone and Yosemite.
  • Manifest Destiny had, officially, been achieved.
  • The frontier had represented danger because of the Native Americans who lived in the region. This was no longer the case.
