What was the First United Front?
The First United Front was a coalition between the GMD and CCP during the warlord era in China.
What were the First United Front aims?
The First United Front had 3 main aims:
  • The removal and destruction of warlord control in China.
  • The expulsion of foreign interests and control in China.
  • To improve everyday life for the Chinese population.
When did the First United Front operate?
The First United Front was formed in 1924 and lasted until April 1927.
Why did the First United Front end?
The First United Front ended early (before the completion of its aims) due to the Shanghai Massacres. This was where communists were arrested, attacked and killed on the orders of Chiang Kai-shek. This formalised the split between the GMD and CCP.
