The American government passed the First Indian Appropriations Act to provide money to move Native Americans from the Indian Territory to reservations. It also allocated them land to hunt.

The US Government wanted to move the Native Americans away from white settlers. The Act created reservations, to encourage Native Americans to abandon their nomadic lifestyle in favour of farming.
