What happened to King Charles I after the English Civil War?
Following defeat in the English Civil War, King Charles was beheaded for treason.
When was King Charles I executed?
He was beheaded on 30th January, 1649.
What was significant about the execution of King Charles I?
It was significant for three main reasons:
  • Many believed that the English people had gone against God by killing their king, who had 'divine right' to rule.
  • The country was to be ruled by Oliver Cromwell.
  • England became a republic with no monarch.
