The Edict of Nantes was a royal decree in France that allowed the Huguenots some freedom in practising Protestantism. It symbolised the end of the French Wars of Religion.
When was the Edict of Nantes?
The Edict of Nantes was signed in 1598, and lasted until it was revoked by King Louis XIV in 1685.
What was the impact of the Edict of Nantes?
After the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685, persecution of Huguenots resumed. As a result, many Huguenots fled France, and up to 50,000 migrated to England.
