The Duke of Anjou was one of Elizabeth's suitors. He led Protestant rebels in the Netherlands against Spanish rule and wanted to become King of the Netherlands.

Elizabeth supported the Duke of Anjou and the Protestant rebels against Spanish rule in the Netherlands in a number of ways.

• ❖ In 1585, she signed the Treaty of Nonsuch, giving the rebels even more support.
