Czechoslovakia became a satellite state through 5 key events:
  • Czechoslovakia had a democracy and strong support for the communists before the war. It was invaded by Germany in 1939.
  • After the war, Soviet troops left the country and elections put the communists in charge of a coalition government.
  • The communists gradually took control of government ministries.
  • Communists arrested political opponents and Jan Masaryk, a non-communist politician, was murdered in March 1948.
  • All non-communist members of the government resigned in February 1948 and the communists assumed complete control.
