What was the Carter doctrine?
The Carter Doctrine stated the USA was prepared to use military force should the USSR try to control the Persian Gulf and threaten America's interests there. It was an extension of the Truman Doctrine to the Middle East.

What were the consequences of the Carter Doctrine?
There were 4 main consequences of the Carter Doctrine.
  • Economic sanctions were imposed on the USSR, which meant American companies could not sell computers or oil drilling technology to the Soviets.
  • The USA refused to export grain to or import oil from the USSR.
  • All countries neighbouring Afghanistan were promised military aid by the USA.
  • This marked a new period of confrontation between the Cold War superpowers. It was called the Second Cold War.
