What happened to the Russian calendar?
Russia has used two different calendars in the last 100 years: the Julian calendar and the Gregorian calendar.
When did the calendar change in Russia?
The old-style Julian calendar was replaced by the Gregorian calendar in January 1918.
What difference did the change to the Russian calendar make?
There were 2 main changes:
  • The change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar meant the loss of 13 days.
  • Events that occurred before January 1918 have two dates. For example, the Bolshevik Revolution occurred on 7th November, 1918 under the Gregorian calendar and on 25th October under the old Julian calendar.
