The Brixton Riot of 1981 was a clash between the Metropolitan Police and protesters in Brixton, London.
What caused the Brixton Riot?
The African-Caribbean community in Brixton was facing high unemployment and poor housing. There was also a lot of anger towards the police and the 'Sus law', which was a stop and search law.
What happened in the Brixton Riot?
In reaction to a case of suspected police brutality, violence began. Police cars were attacked, shops were looted and arson became widespread.
What was the result of the Brixton Riot?
The riots resulted in 299 police officers being injured and the government ordered an inquiry, known as the Scarman Report.
