What was the Bosnian Crisis?
While the 1908 Turkish Revolution was taking place, Austria annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina, which had been under Turkish control. However, the king of Serbia claimed Bosnia & Herzegovina should belong to his country.
What were the consequences of the Bosnian Crisis?
There were 5 main outcomes from the Bosnian Crisis:
  • It increased tension between the alliances, as Russia stepped in to support Serbia, while Germany took Austria-Hungary's side.
  • The Balkan League, consisting of Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and Serbia, was set up with the goal of forcing Turkey out of Europe.
  • Russia backed down and began to rearm.
  • Austria-Hungary now felt it could rely on support from Germany in the future.
  • It weakened the Triple Alliance, as Italy refused to support Austria-Hungary.
