The Big Three's Success With the Peace Settlement

Who was the most satisfied with the terms of the Treaty of Versailles?
The Big Three had differing views about what an acceptable peace settlement looked like and each had different aims. While some aspects of the treaty might be acceptable to some but not to others.
What was Georges Clemenceau satisfied with about the terms of the Treaty of Versailles?
Clemenceau was satisfied with some of the terms:
  • He was happy that Germany had to take the blame for starting the war. The Germans felt humiliated by this and this would have partially satisfied his aim for revenge.
  • He was happy that the German Army and navy were reduced. They weren't allowed to have tanks, submarines or aeroplanes. The Rhineland was demilitarised & Germany was forbidden from uniting with Austria. This would have partially satisfied his aim of protecting France from future attacks.
  • He was happy that Germany would pay reparations, the amount for reparations was set at £6,600 million. France gained the coal from the Saar for 15 years. This would have satisfied his claims partially as it gained reparations and recovered some losses.
What was David Lloyd George satisfied with about the terms of the Treaty of Versailles?
Lloyd George was satisfied with some of terms:
  • The British were happy that Germany had to accept responsibility for the war, and that they received reparations to rebuild after the war. This would have satisfied Lloyd George's aim for gaining revenge for the British people.
  • Lloyd George was happy that one of the terms of the treaty was that the German navy was massively decreased. This would have satisfied Lloyd George's aim to rule the seas.
  • Lloyd George was happy that Britain gained territory from the German empire under the treaty. This would have satisfied Lloyd George as he had protected the empire.
What was Woodrow Wilson satisfied with about the terms of the Treaty of Versailles?
Wilson was satisfied with some aspects of Versailles and the wider peace settlement because:
  • He was happy that many small nations that were apart of empires were given independence. This would have satisfied his aim for self determination.
  • He was happy that the League of Nations was created. This would have satisfied his aim for countries to work together to establish a lasting peace.
