Throughout the summer of 1989, demand for change grew in many East German cities. With the protests escalating, the Berlin Wall was eventually brought down. This was a symbolic marker of communist collapse.

What were the consequences of the fall of the Berlin Wall?
There were 5 main consequences of the fall of the Berlin wall.
  • Soviet troops were withdrawn from East Germany.
  • It encouraged people in other eastern European countries to rise up against communist rule.
  • Soviet troops then withdrew from many other eastern European countries from 1990 onwards.
  • US, French and British troops were still posted in West Germany.
  • It eventually led to the reunification of East and West Germany as a single country in November 1990.
