Antiseptics are subtances used to kill microorganisms and prevent infection.

When were antiseptics developed?

Understanding of infection increased during the 1840s with the work of Ignaz Semmelweis. The first antiseptic, carbolic acid, was used by Joseph Lister in 1865.
