How was Anglo-Saxon land divided up?
England was divided into around 34 shires, which were then divided into hundreds and then tithings. Each unit of land had its own responsibilities to the kingdom.
How was Anglo-Saxon land measured?
Anglo-Saxons land was divided into shires, hundreds and tithings.
  • Shires later became known as counties. They had their own courts, provided troops for the fyrd, had a burh, and a king's representative in the form of the shire reeve.
  • Hundreds were originally 100 hides of land, or areas that contained 100 families.
  • Tithings traditionally contained ten families.
