What was the influence of anarchists in Whitechapel?
Anarchists were influential in 2 main ways:
  • In 1871, anarchists managed to briefly overthrow the French authorities to establish the Paris Commune. When the authorities subsequently dismantled the commune, many of the leaders escaped to London - and Whitechapel.
  • The famous anarchist, Mikhail Bakunin, lived in Whitechapel. He was under observation by Special Branch from 1893.
