Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by the Black Hand in an attempt to make sure he didn't pacify the Serbians in Bosnia. Pacifying the Serbians in Bosnia would strengthen the archduke's position when he came to the throne but would also undermine Serbia's plans to unite all Slavs in a Greater Serbia - the Black Hand wanted an independent Serbia, free from Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman rule.
