1932 Election

Who won the 1932 election?
Franklin Roosevelt won the 1932 election with his idea for 'A New Deal for the American people'.
Why did Roosevelt win the 1932 election?
There are 5 key reasons why Roosevelt won:
  • He promised a 'New Deal' for everyone. He said the government would have a more active role in the economy to help overcome the Great Depression.
  • Unlike Hoover, he ran a positive and energetic campaign. He could make up to 15 speeches a day.
  • He had already helped the poor as Governor of New York when he set up the first state-run relief scheme.
  • The Great Depression worsened during Hoover's presidency.
  • Millions of people had to exist in 'Hoovervilles' which were shanty towns named after, and blamed on, Hoover.
